The Parish Council has been copied into a letter from the Ministry of Justice to Cassop cum Quarrington with Bowburn Parochial Church Council, about the Parochial Church Council’s proposal to close the Churchyard to further burials. The Ministry of Justice said that they have received a number of objections following the advertisement of the proposed closure by the Parochial Church Council.
Regrettably, the Ministry of Justice states that they intend to make representations that burials should be discontinued within the burial ground. Their letter says they have responded to the objections providing reasoning as to why the Churchyard is closing for further burials.
The Parish Council has not received a response to its letter to the Ministry of Justice objecting to the proposed closure of Quarrington Hill Churchyard, which is available through the link.
The letter says the Privy Council Office will publish notice of the closure in the local newspaper, and it should be posted on the church door, and must be posted for at least a month before the Privy Council can finally determine the application. There is a ten day period from the date of the letter (17 January) set out in legislation, which provides a further opportunity for comments or objections, which can be emailed to the Ministry of Justice at coroners@justice.gov.uk
Coxhoe Parish Council had objected to the proposed closure, because the Parochial Church Council had not carried out the recommended geo-technical surveys, despite the Parish Council having been prepared to fund this. In the Parish Council’s survey on Quarrington Hill Churchyard in late 2020, 87 per cent of residents wanted the Churchyard to be kept open for future burials.
