Mini Police Make a Big Difference in Coxhoe Clean-Up!
Did you know that 23 pieces of litter are dropped every second in our country? Coxhoe Primary School Children know this now after recently spending an interesting day learning about and picking up litter in their village.

Alongside local parish councillor ‘Mr King’, they first took part in an assembly in the morning. We learned that Coxhoe isn’t bad overall for litter but that there are some hotspots.

We recognised that the worst part of the village is on the road up to the tip, but that also Parson’s Walk and the track near to Coxhoe Wood aren’t great either. Plastic litter for example has a life of 450 years and that every year nearly 3 million small mammals in the UK die from being trapped in it.
So in the afternoon, the school’s Mini Police decided to do something about it. With great enthusiasm, we picked up over 1,100 pieces of litter on Parson’s Walk, from the school around to Bogma Hall Farm. We recognised that most of the litter was probably children’s litter (crisp packets, sweet wrappers etc) and we agreed we ought to try harder in the future. As well as having a serious side, the litter picking was also really good fun. We found some weird things too such as a school jumper, a toothbrush and a mug.
The annual Durham Big Spring Clean is coming and Coxhoe Parish Council is also taking part. During the Easter school holidays, we are meeting on Tuesday 11th April, 11.00am at the village hall. All adults and families are welcome to join us. The next school litter pick is in June and we are hoping to find a bit less that time…
