Quarrington Hill Churchyard: Parish Council Decision Following Resident Survey

Feedback showed a broad range of views, though a clear majority supported the Parish Council taking a more active role in the management and maintenance of the churchyard. Many residents noted that the site has not been adequately maintained by the church and felt that a responsible body is needed to ensure its long-term care. The proposed plans were widely regarded as sensible, practical, and important for preserving the churchyard for future generations.

A consistent theme throughout the responses was the need for regular and reliable maintenance. Residents highlighted the importance of keeping the grounds tidy, cutting back trees and grass, improving accessibility, and ensuring the churchyard remains a respectful and welcoming place for families visiting loved ones. Suggestions for improvements included installing benches and bins, creating a memorial area for cremated remains and exploring the idea of a community memory garden where trees could be planted in remembrance.

While a small number of respondents expressed reservations or offered no opinion, the overall sentiment strongly favoured clearer management arrangements and long-term protection of the site.

In light of the majority view, councillors voted unanimously to support the formal closure of Quarrington Hill Churchyard and to accept responsibility for its ongoing maintenance. Work will now continue with the Parochial Council, Durham County Council, the War Graves Commission and Alan Strickland MP to ensure a smooth and effective transition.
