Safety First: Too Close to Home for Fireworks
We are very disappointed to announce we will be unable to provide a Fireworks Display in 2026.
Published: 29 January 2026
As you will be aware, Gleeson Homes are building 83 new homes within Coxhoe, directly adjacent to Coxhoe Park. Coxhoe Parish Council formally objected to this planning application in November 2024: (https://coxhoeparishcouncil.gov.uk/news/parish-council-formally-objects-to-development-on-grange-farm/).
The Parish Council can confirm that consultations with Reaction Fireworks and Gleeson have now concluded, and it has been advised that the required safety perimeter can no longer be met and this site is no longer suitable for the display.
Officers have explored alternatives (such as joint events with a neighbouring parish or an alternate venue) but are unable to secure anything for 2026. The event requires a great deal of forward planning, which begins in February each year, therefore the decision has been made to cancel this year’s event. That isn’t to say we can’t investigate possibilities for future years!
Providing much loved and well attended community events is something we are very proud to deliver, and the Parish Council resolved to bring a different sort of event this year. We are open to suggestion and would welcome your ideas. The Parish Council are considering any and all types of events such as a summer fête, winter wonderland or even joining the Durham Brass Festival.
